Selecting an Antique Coffee Table

Where to Look for an Antique Coffee Table

You may not consider buying antique furniture if you prefer a modern look to your home.  However, antiques can fit in a variety of decors and can change the look of a room.  They can complement any style, depending on the era of the antique you buy.

You will not want to buy all of your furniture as antiques, but one piece can fit in nicely to change the atmosphere.  A coffee table can be the perfect piece to experiment with.  For instance, you may like the clean lines of a modern design.  You can look for a simple antique coffee table that will blend in with the modern style while adding warmth to your room.

Visit an Auction to Find Antique Coffee Tables

It can be difficult to find the right antique piece for your home.  However, there are places you can check until you find what you are looking for.  Estate sales list their items on a flyer and if you find something that is interesting, you can go look at it.  If it suits your style, you can bid on it and hope you win.

You can also visit auction houses where items from previous and future sales are held.  You may be able to buy the piece outright for a certain price.  The only problem with this is that other antique dealers are also looking at these pieces and will pay a high price to get them.  It can still be worth looking at because you can get lucky and be the one to take home a prized antique.

Second Hand and Antique Stores

You can find a good selection of old furniture in antique stores.  Some of the pieces are quite expensive since they are antiques, but sometimes you can find a bargain.  A piece of furniture may have a knick or dent in it or be scratched and not bring the top price.  If you are willing to do a little refinishing or repair work, you can get a bargain.

Second hand stores are often cheaper but they may not always be able to tell you the exact date of the piece.  Larger stores may have had an expert look at it, but the small stores may just want to sell the piece.

Garage Sales Can Have Bargain Antiques

You may find an old coffee table at a garage sale.  People often sell their old items to get rid of them and don’t have them checked out by an expert.  They will put a standard price on the item and not realize or care that it is an antique.  The only downside of going to garage sales to get your antique coffee table is that you may not be able to find out the true age of the piece.

There are many places you can go to find the right antique coffee table for your home.  You will have to decide if price or authenticity is more important because that will guide your search.  The perfect coffee table is out there; it just may take some time to find it.
